Britain and France are fighting for a continent. Forts in the forests, fleets on the St Lawrence, redcoats and white-coats in long lines. Choose your side.
Campaign map: tap one of your towns or forts to see its army. Tap Move, then tap a place next to it to march. March into an enemy place to fight for it. Each army can move once a turn.
Recruit soldiers with your treasury. Towns and forts pay you every turn, so capture more. Cavalry, artillery and grenadiers can only be raised in towns. Ships can only be built in ports.
Win the war by capturing both of the enemy's great cities (British: Quebec and Montreal. French: Albany and New York), or by holding the most when the war ends in autumn 1760.
Battles: tap your units to select them, tap the ground to move, tap an enemy to attack. Artillery and light troops shoot by themselves. Your line infantry hold their fire until you order MAKE READY and FIRE! Fire several battalions together at 60 yards or closer for a PERFECT VOLLEY.
Discipline wins: units that are scared fire raggedly or run. Use STEADY! Charge with bayonets or cavalry when the enemy is shaken. Cavalry are deadly against troops that are reloading, but a ready volley stops them.
Forest ambush: enemy light troops hide in the trees until they fire or you get close. Sieges: artillery smashes a breach in the fort wall, then storm it. Landings: tap the beach to choose where your boats land.
Camera: pinch or use + and − to zoom into the fighting, drag to look around, and ⤢ to see the whole battlefield again.
At sea: steer with ◀ ▶. Ships sail fastest with the wind on their side and almost stop when pointing into it. Get the enemy beside you and fire a broadside. Chain shot wrecks sails. Board a badly hurt ship to capture it.
The real war
The Seven Years' War (1756 to 1763) was fought around the world. In North America it is often called the French and Indian War, and the fighting there started in 1754.
New France (Canada) had far fewer settlers than the British colonies, but it had brave Canadian militia, strong forts, First Nations allies and the brilliant General Montcalm.
The French won the early battles: Braddock's defeat at the Monongahela (1755), Oswego (1756), Fort William Henry (1757) and Carillon (1758).
Britain then poured in soldiers and ships. Louisbourg fell in 1758, Quebec in 1759 after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, and Montreal surrendered in 1760.
In the Treaty of Paris (1763) France gave Canada to Britain.
